How does clinical Pilates work?
As a full-body exercise method, Pilates builds core stability, reinforces good posture, increases flexibility, and promotes proper breathing techniques.
Led by an allied health professional, typically a physiotherapist, Clinical Pilates is designed with anatomical expertise and a strong focus on injury management, ensuring every program is tailored to your specific needs.
What conditions can Pilates help?
As a well-rounded form of movement therapy, Pilates can support the recovery and management of many pain conditions, injuries, and dysfunctions, including:
- Neck or back pain
- Tension headaches
- Sports injuries
- Women’s health (including pelvic floor health)
- Pre and postnatal health
- Joint injuries or pain
- Heel pain
- Repetitive strain injuries (RSI)
- Carpal tunnel
- Sciatica
- Herniated disc
Understanding the difference between Pilates and clinical Pilates
Although Pilates and clinical Pilates share a focus on core strength, flexibility, and posture, they are distinct in their goals and how sessions are delivered.
Pilates is typically aimed at boosting overall fitness, strength and flexibility, while clinical Pilates is used to manage particular injuries, postural imbalances, and functional issues.
In traditional Pilates, participants join a larger class where everyone follows the same routine under the guidance of an instructor. Clinical Pilates is more individualised, led by a physiotherapist or other allied health professional, and conducted in smaller groups or one-on-one.
What to expect from a clinical Pilates class?
Your Pilates journey begins with a 45-minute Initial Private session, where we assess your needs and design a rehab program aligned with your goals and any injuries. After this, you may either move into a small group class (capped at 4 participants) or continue privately, as advised by your instructor.
Small class sizes ensure that you receive an exceptional level of care and attention from your instructor.
At Williamstown Health + Lifestyle, we offer a contemporary, well-equipped space designed to meet all your program needs.
Equipment includes:
- Reformer machines
- Trapeze table
- Wunda chair
- Spine corrector
- Free weights
- Resistance bands
- Balance boards and discs
