How does clinical Pilates work?

Pilates helps develop better muscle control, supports posture, improves flexibility, and focuses on controlled breathing throughout each movement.

Clinical Pilates is led by an instructor who is also a qualified allied health professional (usually a physiotherapist, but not always). They possess skilled anatomical knowledge and specialise in injury management, which enables them to tailor Pilates programs to suit each individual perfectly.

What conditions can Pilates help?

Pilates can be beneficial as a holistic approach to the management and rehabilitation of various types of pain, injury, and dysfunction, including:

  • Neck or back pain
  • Tension headaches
  • Sports injuries
  • Women’s health (including pelvic floor health)
  • Pre and postnatal health
  • Joint injuries or pain
  • Heel pain
  • Repetitive strain injuries (RSI)
  • Carpal tunnel
  • Sciatica
  • Herniated disc

Pilates vs clinical Pilates – what sets them apart?

Pilates and clinical Pilates both aim to enhance core strength, flexibility, posture, and body awareness, but they differ in terms of structure and intended outcomes.

Where Pilates is designed for general fitness, strength, and flexibility, clinical Pilates targets specific musculoskeletal injuries, postural issues, and/or functional movement patterns that a person is experiencing.

Pilates is generally offered in larger group classes of around 8 or more people, following a set routine guided by a qualified instructor. Clinical Pilates, however, is delivered either individually or in small groups and led by a physiotherapist or allied health practitioner using a personalised program.

What happens in a clinical Pilates session?

Every new client begins with a 45-minute one-on-one session. This session is used to create a personalised rehab plan tailored to your body and goals, while also addressing any existing injuries. Depending on the outcome, your instructor may recommend either joining a small group class (maximum 4 participants) or continuing privately.

Smaller group sizes allow for more personalised attention and support throughout your session.
