What is clinical Pilates?
Pilates is a form of exercise that works to improve stability and muscle control, improve and strengthen posture, and increase flexibility with an emphasis on proper breathing.
Clinical Pilates is taught by a qualified allied health practitioner—often a physiotherapist—who brings in-depth anatomical understanding and experience in managing injuries, allowing them to customise each program to the individual.
Which conditions may Pilates help with?
Pilates offers a holistic method for managing and rehabilitating a range of pain, injuries, and functional issues, including:
- Neck or back pain
- Tension headaches
- Sports injuries
- Women’s health (including pelvic floor health)
- Pre and postnatal health
- Joint injuries or pain
- Heel pain
- Repetitive strain injuries (RSI)
- Carpal tunnel
- Sciatica
- Herniated disc
What is the difference between Pilates and clinical Pilates?
While the foundations of Pilates and clinical Pilates are similar—centred on strength, flexibility, and alignment—their purpose and delivery differ in meaningful ways.
Pilates supports general health and fitness, whereas clinical Pilates is more focused on managing injuries, improving posture, and correcting movement patterns.
Pilates typically takes place in group settings with a fixed routine led by a certified instructor. Clinical Pilates differs in that it’s delivered in smaller groups or individually, led by a physiotherapist or allied health professional, with exercises tailored to each person’s needs.
What does a clinical Pilates class involve?
Every new client begins with a 45-minute one-on-one session. This session is used to create a personalised rehab plan tailored to your body and goals, while also addressing any existing injuries. Depending on the outcome, your instructor may recommend either joining a small group class (maximum 4 participants) or continuing privately.
Limited class numbers mean your instructor can closely monitor your technique and tailor feedback to your needs.
Our modern, custom-designed studio at Williamstown Health + Lifestyle has everything required for your sessions and personalised care.

- Reformer machines
