What does a myotherapist do?

Myotherapists provide evidence-informed assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation for a wide range of musculoskeletal pain and associated conditions caused by muscle or myofascial dysfunction.

Myofascia are the thin, fibrous sheets of tissue that surround and separate our muscles. The structure also includes the ligaments and tendons.

When patients’ symptoms have settled, treatment then focuses on restoring movement through modifying activity, helping to reduce the risk of further injury and keeping you moving and feeling your best.

What techniques do myotherapists use?

Our practitioners use a range of hands-on treatment techniques to reduce pain and treat postural imbalances, including:

  • Myofascial release
  • Deep tissue, sports, and/or remedial massage
  • Trigger point therapy
  • Dry needling
  • Cupping
  • Muscle stretching
  • Hot or cold therapy
  • Joint mobilisation
  • Muscle energy techniques
  • Soft tissue manipulation
  • Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) therapy
  • Corrective exercises

What to expect during your myotherapy consultation?

Your first myotherapy consultation begins with a subjective examination to determine the reason for your visit, such as (but not limited to) collecting information regarding areas of pain or discomfort, mechanism of injury, lifestyle factors, current and past medical history, and your goals.

Your qualified therapist will then perform a thorough assessment of areas of pain, posture, and functional limitations. They will then use this information to determine the cause of your pain/discomfort and put together and discuss a management plan with you.

What are the benefits of myotherapy?

Myotherapy offers many benefits for enhancing your overall physical health and well-being, including:

It also plays a role in enhancing athletic performance by helping athletes increase their range of motion, reduce fatigue, and improve their movement efficiency. All of this may help with injury prevention.

What is the difference between myotherapy and massage, and which one is better for me?

While myotherapy utilises remedial massage (including lymphatic drainage) as a treatment technique, there is a lot more to it than that. Your myotherapist will aim for long-term relief and/or a solution to your pain and discomfort.

Remedial massage is a common tool used across several modalities that can help with short-term pain relief and has a therapeutic purpose. Relaxation massage, on the other hand, is typically used to promote relaxation and does not offer therapeutic benefits (although it has been found to relieve muscle tension).
