How can a Physiotherapist support you?
Physiotherapy supports the body through physical techniques like guided exercise, soft tissue work, joint mobilisation, and strategies for managing load and movement.
The role of a physiotherapist involves examining how the body moves, identifying areas of strain or imbalance, and developing a plan suited to the individual. Their aim is to ease discomfort and encourage movement that supports overall wellbeing.
What sets Physiotherapy and Osteopathy apart?
Although there is some overlap in the conditions they treat, osteopaths usually focus on manual therapies, working with the body through touch-based methods to assist with symptom relief and movement.
Physiotherapy commonly involves active methods such as strengthening, mobility exercises and rehabilitation strategies. At times, working with both our physiotherapist and osteopath can give you a more balanced and collaborative treatment plan.
How do we assist at Williamstown Physiotherapy?
Our physiotherapists work across many areas, including sports-related issues, post-surgery recovery, and conditions linked to wear and tear. We focus on supporting long-term movement and strength, and can help plan ongoing exercise routines once the immediate concern is under control.
Physiotherapy supports a wide range of physical concerns, so feel free to reach out to our team if you have any questions or would like to know more.
How are Physiotherapists trained?
Physiotherapists complete a three or four year university degree in Physiotherapy. Many also go on to study at Masters level, developing deeper knowledge in particular areas of practice.
Continued learning is a requirement for all registered physiotherapists, which means the care we offer is informed by the latest standards and current practices.
No referral is needed to begin Physiotherapy, but it’s common for GPs to suggest it when they see it as a suitable next step for your health.
How much time should I allow for a session?
Your initial Physiotherapy session will be 45 minutes. In this time our physiotherapist will ask questions to gather a detailed history of your condition, they will conduct a physical assessment to identify the causes and possible contributing factors and then form an individual treatment plan to manage your pain and dysfunction.
Most follow-up Physiotherapy sessions run for 30 minutes and include ongoing assessment, updates to your exercise plan, and any additional treatments needed.
If you’re looking for a short consultation, we offer 15 minute appointments at Williamstown Health + Lifestyle for brief assessments or to address any queries you might have.
What happens during the initial Physiotherapy session?
During your initial consultation, your physiotherapist will take detailed notes on your condition, review your medical history, and ask questions to help rule out any serious underlying concerns. Our clinicians are equipped to identify when further investigation or referral may be necessary.
An assessment will follow to identify any physical limitations or contributing factors to your concern. We recommend activewear or loose clothing to allow for ease of movement. If any clothing adjustment is needed for assessment purposes, your practitioner will ensure the process is handled respectfully and you’re welcome to discuss your preferences at any stage.
Together with your physiotherapist, you’ll identify what matters most to you—whether it’s returning to a certain activity or improving function. This goal will help steer the treatment plan over time.
