What kind of care does a Physiotherapist provide?
Through tailored physical approaches—such as stretching, movement retraining, hands-on therapy, and functional planning—physiotherapy assists in managing injuries and physical conditions.
The role of a physiotherapist involves examining how the body moves, identifying areas of strain or imbalance, and developing a plan suited to the individual. Their aim is to ease discomfort and encourage movement that supports overall wellbeing.
What is the difference between Physiotherapy and Osteopathy?
While both professions address similar concerns, osteopaths generally take a more hands-on approach, using physical techniques like massage and joint manipulation to ease discomfort and manage symptoms.
Physiotherapy commonly involves active methods such as strengthening, mobility exercises and rehabilitation strategies. At times, working with both our physiotherapist and osteopath can give you a more balanced and collaborative treatment plan.
How can our physiotherapists help?
Our team offers care in a range of areas—from sports injuries and post-operative recovery to ongoing conditions that develop over time. We also aim to help you move well and stay active, offering guidance on fitness programs and exercises to support long-term wellbeing.
If you’re wondering whether physiotherapy may be right for your situation, our team is available to talk through your questions and provide guidance.
How are Physiotherapists trained?
A Bachelor degree in Physiotherapy, typically spanning three to four years, is required to become a physiotherapist. Some choose to pursue additional qualifications at a Masters level in a specific area.
Continued learning is a requirement for all registered physiotherapists, which means the care we offer is informed by the latest standards and current practices.
No referral is needed to begin Physiotherapy, but it’s common for GPs to suggest it when they see it as a suitable next step for your health.
What’s the length of a Physiotherapy appointment?
At your first 45-minute Physiotherapy session, we’ll begin by learning more about your condition through questions and assessment. From there, a personalised plan will be created to help address your concerns.
Subsequent sessions are typically 30 minutes long, allowing time for your physiotherapist to reassess your progress, adjust your exercises, and carry out further treatment if required.
If you’re looking for a short consultation, we offer 15 minute appointments at Williamstown Health + Lifestyle for brief assessments or to address any queries you might have.
What can I expect from my first consultation?
At your first appointment, your physiotherapist will gather a thorough history, ask about past injuries, and check for any signs that may point to a more complex issue. They can arrange imaging or refer you to another provider if needed.
An assessment will follow to identify any physical limitations or contributing factors to your concern. We recommend activewear or loose clothing to allow for ease of movement. If any clothing adjustment is needed for assessment purposes, your practitioner will ensure the process is handled respectfully and you’re welcome to discuss your preferences at any stage.
Together with your physiotherapist, you’ll identify what matters most to you—whether it’s returning to a certain activity or improving function. This goal will help steer the treatment plan over time.
