What is the role of a Physiotherapist?

Through tailored physical approaches—such as stretching, movement retraining, hands-on therapy, and functional planning—physiotherapy assists in managing injuries and physical conditions.

A physiotherapist looks closely at what might be causing pain or dysfunction, then develops a movement-based plan suited to each person. Their work supports improved mobility, reduced discomfort, and better everyday function.

How do Physiotherapy and Osteopathy differ?

While both professions address similar concerns, osteopaths generally take a more hands-on approach, using physical techniques like massage and joint manipulation to ease discomfort and manage symptoms.

Using tailored exercises, load control and movement planning, a physiotherapist helps support strength, mobility and stability. For some people, combining the input of both a physiotherapist and osteopath provides broader support for their wellbeing.

How can Williamstown Physiotherapy support your needs?

With experience in managing sports injuries, post-surgical recovery, and long-term movement concerns, our physiotherapists are here to help keep you moving. We’re also available to talk through ways to stay active into the future with tailored fitness and exercise plans.

Physiotherapy can be an effective treatment for a multitude of conditions so please contact our team to discuss any questions or queries you may have.

What study and training do Physiotherapists complete?

Physiotherapists complete a three or four year university degree in Physiotherapy. Many also go on to study at Masters level, developing deeper knowledge in particular areas of practice.

Continued learning is a requirement for all registered physiotherapists, which means the care we offer is informed by the latest standards and current practices.

No referral is needed to begin Physiotherapy, but it’s common for GPs to suggest it when they see it as a suitable next step for your health.

How long will my Physiotherapy session be?

Your first Physiotherapy appointment runs for 45 minutes. During this session, your physiotherapist will take a thorough history, assess your movement and physical function, and develop a tailored approach to support your recovery.

A standard follow-up appointment is 30 minutes and may involve reassessment, changes to your exercise routine, and any further support tailored to your current needs.

If you’re looking for a short consultation, we offer 15 minute appointments at Williamstown Health + Lifestyle for brief assessments or to address any queries you might have.

What’s involved in the first appointment?

During your initial consultation, your physiotherapist will take detailed notes on your condition, review your medical history, and ask questions to help rule out any serious underlying concerns. Our clinicians are equipped to identify when further investigation or referral may be necessary.

Your physiotherapist will then conduct a physical assessment to determine your current strengths, weaknesses and limitations that may contribute to your issue. Please dress in loose-fitting, active clothing to allow for free movement and proper assessment of the particular area. We may require you to remove some clothing if necessary but we endeavour to keep you as comfortable as possible throughout the consultation so please discuss this further with your practitioner at any time.

Together with your physiotherapist, you’ll identify what matters most to you—whether it’s returning to a certain activity or improving function. This goal will help steer the treatment plan over time.
