What does a Physiotherapist do?

Through tailored physical approaches—such as stretching, movement retraining, hands-on therapy, and functional planning—physiotherapy assists in managing injuries and physical conditions.

The role of a physiotherapist involves examining how the body moves, identifying areas of strain or imbalance, and developing a plan suited to the individual. Their aim is to ease discomfort and encourage movement that supports overall wellbeing.

Are there differences between Physiotherapy and Osteopathy?

Although there is some overlap in the conditions they treat, osteopaths usually focus on manual therapies, working with the body through touch-based methods to assist with symptom relief and movement.

A physiotherapist tends to use a more active approach to strengthen and stabilise or lengthen and mobilise. This is done predominately through targeted exercises, load management and rehabilitation programs. With that in mind, sometimes it is beneficial to seek treatment from our osteopath and our physiotherapist together to provide a complete approach to your care.

How can Williamstown Physiotherapy help you?

With experience in managing sports injuries, post-surgical recovery, and long-term movement concerns, our physiotherapists are here to help keep you moving. We’re also available to talk through ways to stay active into the future with tailored fitness and exercise plans.

If you’re wondering whether physiotherapy may be right for your situation, our team is available to talk through your questions and provide guidance.

What professional training do Physiotherapists have?

A Bachelor degree in Physiotherapy, typically spanning three to four years, is required to become a physiotherapist. Some choose to pursue additional qualifications at a Masters level in a specific area.

Physiotherapists are also required to continue regular professional learning to retain their registration therefore we will always endeavour to provide you with the most up-to-date and gold standard treatment approach.

Because of this, you do not need to be referred by your doctor to seek Physiotherapy treatment but often your GP will recommend Physiotherapy as an appropriate course of action for you.

How much time should I allow for a session?

Your first Physiotherapy appointment runs for 45 minutes. During this session, your physiotherapist will take a thorough history, assess your movement and physical function, and develop a tailored approach to support your recovery.

A standard follow-up appointment is 30 minutes and may involve reassessment, changes to your exercise routine, and any further support tailored to your current needs.

We also provide 15 minute appointments at Williamstown Health + Lifestyle, perfect for a quick check-in or to go over any questions you may have.

What should I know about my first consultation?

Your first session includes a full discussion of your concern, relevant medical background, and a check for any signs of more significant health issues. If appropriate, your physiotherapist can refer you for scans or additional support.

Your physiotherapist will perform a physical examination to evaluate areas of strength, restriction and imbalance. Please wear clothing that allows free movement. In some cases, limited clothing removal may be needed, but your comfort is our priority, and you’re welcome to speak with your practitioner about this at any point.

Your physiotherapist will help you set a personal goal during your consultation, such as an activity you’d like to resume. This forms a key part of the plan and helps guide your progress across future sessions.
