What is the role of a Physiotherapist?

Physiotherapy is the treatment of injury, disease and disorders through physical methods – such as exercise and strengthening, massage and mobilisation, load management and return to function.

The role of the physiotherapist is to identify the cause of pain or dysfunction and assess movement patterns in order to form a treatment plan individualised to the client. Physiotherapists are highly trained professionals who aim to improve a person’s quality of life by using their skills and knowledge to alleviate pain, restore function and promote healthy movement patterns.

How do Physiotherapy and Osteopathy differ?

Both professions often treat the same conditions, but with a slightly different approach. An osteopath tends to be more hands on, predominantly using manual techniques such as massage and manipulation to provide pain management and symptom relief.

Physiotherapy commonly involves active methods such as strengthening, mobility exercises and rehabilitation strategies. At times, working with both our physiotherapist and osteopath can give you a more balanced and collaborative treatment plan.

How can our physiotherapists help?

Our Physiotherapists specialise in a variety of different areas, including sports injuries, post operative rehabilitation and repetitive or degeneration conditions. We are also committed to improving healthy movement and keeping you stronger and active for longer. As a result we are happy to discuss fitness programs and exercise plans for longer term management after the initial injury has been addressed.

Physiotherapy can be an effective treatment for a multitude of conditions so please contact our team to discuss any questions or queries you may have.

What study and training do Physiotherapists complete?

Physiotherapists complete a three or four year university degree in Physiotherapy. Many also go on to study at Masters level, developing deeper knowledge in particular areas of practice.

Physiotherapists are also required to continue regular professional learning to retain their registration therefore we will always endeavour to provide you with the most up-to-date and gold standard treatment approach.

Because of this, you do not need to be referred by your doctor to seek Physiotherapy treatment but often your GP will recommend Physiotherapy as an appropriate course of action for you.

How long does a typical Physiotherapy session take?

Your first Physiotherapy appointment runs for 45 minutes. During this session, your physiotherapist will take a thorough history, assess your movement and physical function, and develop a tailored approach to support your recovery.

Subsequent sessions are typically 30 minutes long, allowing time for your physiotherapist to reassess your progress, adjust your exercises, and carry out further treatment if required.

We also provide 15 minute appointments at Williamstown Health + Lifestyle, perfect for a quick check-in or to go over any questions you may have.

What’s involved in the first appointment?

Your first session includes a full discussion of your concern, relevant medical background, and a check for any signs of more significant health issues. If appropriate, your physiotherapist can refer you for scans or additional support.

Your physiotherapist will perform a physical examination to evaluate areas of strength, restriction and imbalance. Please wear clothing that allows free movement. In some cases, limited clothing removal may be needed, but your comfort is our priority, and you’re welcome to speak with your practitioner about this at any point.

An important part of your consultation involves working with your physiotherapist to set a goal—something you’d like to return to or achieve once the issue has improved. This helps shape the direction of your treatment.
