What is clinical Pilates?
Pilates is a form of exercise that works to improve stability and muscle control, improve and strengthen posture, and increase flexibility with an emphasis on proper breathing.
A Clinical Pilates instructor is a trained allied health provider, commonly a physiotherapist, with advanced knowledge of the body and rehabilitation. This allows them to deliver personalised programs based on your condition and goals.
Which conditions may Pilates help with?
Pilates is often used as a whole-body approach to aid in the rehabilitation and management of pain, injury, and movement limitations, including:
- Neck or back pain
- Tension headaches
- Sports injuries
- Women’s health (including pelvic floor health)
- Pre and postnatal health
- Joint injuries or pain
- Heel pain
- Repetitive strain injuries (RSI)
- Carpal tunnel
- Sciatica
- Herniated disc
What is the difference between Pilates and clinical Pilates?
While the foundations of Pilates and clinical Pilates are similar—centred on strength, flexibility, and alignment—their purpose and delivery differ in meaningful ways.
While Pilates focuses on overall fitness, strength, and flexibility, clinical Pilates is tailored to address musculoskeletal injuries, postural concerns, or movement dysfunctions.
In traditional Pilates, participants join a larger class where everyone follows the same routine under the guidance of an instructor. Clinical Pilates is more individualised, led by a physiotherapist or other allied health professional, and conducted in smaller groups or one-on-one.
What to expect from a clinical Pilates class?
All first-time clients attend a 45-minute private session to create a customised rehab program focused on individual goals and any injuries present. After this, your instructor may suggest transitioning into a small group class of up to 4 people or continuing with private sessions.
With fewer participants per class, your instructor can provide focused care and individual guidance.
We have a modern, purpose-built facility here at Williamstown Health + Lifestyle that is equipped with everything you need to participate in your program.
Equipment includes:
- Reformer machines
- Trapeze table
- Wunda chair
- Spine corrector
- Free weights
