How does clinical Pilates work?

Pilates helps develop better muscle control, supports posture, improves flexibility, and focuses on controlled breathing throughout each movement.

Led by an allied health professional, typically a physiotherapist, Clinical Pilates is designed with anatomical expertise and a strong focus on injury management, ensuring every program is tailored to your specific needs.

What conditions can Pilates assist with?

Pilates can be beneficial as a holistic approach to the management and rehabilitation of various types of pain, injury, and dysfunction, including:

  • Neck or back pain
  • Tension headaches
  • Sports injuries
  • Women’s health (including pelvic floor health)
  • Pre and postnatal health
  • Joint injuries or pain
  • Heel pain
  • Repetitive strain injuries (RSI)
  • Carpal tunnel
  • Sciatica
  • Herniated disc

Understanding the difference between Pilates and clinical Pilates

While both Pilates and clinical Pilates are the same in that they focus on improving core strength, flexibility, posture, and body awareness, there are key differences in their purpose and structure.

Pilates supports general health and fitness, whereas clinical Pilates is more focused on managing injuries, improving posture, and correcting movement patterns.

Pilates is undertaken in group classes (usually 8 or more participants) and led by a qualified instructor using a structured routine that all participants follow. Clinical Pilates, on the other hand, is undertaken either 1-on-1 or in a small group class setting and is led by a physiotherapist (or other allied health professional) using a routine that is customised to the needs of each participant.

Your guide to a clinical Pilates class

Your Pilates journey begins with a 45-minute Initial Private session, where we assess your needs and design a rehab program aligned with your goals and any injuries. After this, you may either move into a small group class (capped at 4 participants) or continue privately, as advised by your instructor.

Limited class numbers mean your instructor can closely monitor your technique and tailor feedback to your needs.

At Williamstown Health + Lifestyle, we offer a contemporary, well-equipped space designed to meet all your program needs.

Equipment includes:

  • Reformer machines
  • Trapeze table
  • Wunda chair
  • Spine corrector
  • Free weights
  • Resistance bands
  • Balance boards and discs
