What is clinical Pilates?
Pilates is a movement practice designed to enhance stability, strengthen posture, boost flexibility, and encourage mindful breathing.
A Clinical Pilates instructor is a trained allied health provider, commonly a physiotherapist, with advanced knowledge of the body and rehabilitation. This allows them to deliver personalised programs based on your condition and goals.
Which conditions can Pilates assist with?
Pilates can be beneficial as a holistic approach to the management and rehabilitation of various types of pain, injury, and dysfunction, including:
- Neck or back pain
- Tension headaches
- Sports injuries
- Women’s health (including pelvic floor health)
- Pre and postnatal health
- Joint injuries or pain
- Heel pain
- Repetitive strain injuries (RSI)
- Carpal tunnel
- Sciatica
- Herniated disc
Understanding the difference between Pilates and clinical Pilates
Pilates and clinical Pilates both aim to enhance core strength, flexibility, posture, and body awareness, but they differ in terms of structure and intended outcomes.
Pilates is typically aimed at boosting overall fitness, strength and flexibility, while clinical Pilates is used to manage particular injuries, postural imbalances, and functional issues.
Pilates is generally offered in larger group classes of around 8 or more people, following a set routine guided by a qualified instructor. Clinical Pilates, however, is delivered either individually or in small groups and led by a physiotherapist or allied health practitioner using a personalised program.
What does a clinical Pilates class involve?
Every new client begins with a 45-minute one-on-one session. This session is used to create a personalised rehab plan tailored to your body and goals, while also addressing any existing injuries. Depending on the outcome, your instructor may recommend either joining a small group class (maximum 4 participants) or continuing privately.
With fewer participants per class, your instructor can provide focused care and individual guidance.
We have a modern, purpose-built facility here at Williamstown Health + Lifestyle that is equipped with everything you need to participate in your program.
Equipment includes:
- Reformer machines
- Trapeze table
