What does clinical Pilates involve?
As a full-body exercise method, Pilates builds core stability, reinforces good posture, increases flexibility, and promotes proper breathing techniques.
Clinical Pilates is taught by a qualified allied health practitioner—often a physiotherapist—who brings in-depth anatomical understanding and experience in managing injuries, allowing them to customise each program to the individual.
Which conditions can Pilates assist with?
Pilates can be beneficial as a holistic approach to the management and rehabilitation of various types of pain, injury, and dysfunction, including:
- Neck or back pain
- Tension headaches
- Sports injuries
- Women’s health (including pelvic floor health)
- Pre and postnatal health
- Joint injuries or pain
- Heel pain
- Repetitive strain injuries (RSI)
- Carpal tunnel
- Sciatica
- Herniated disc
What is the difference between Pilates and clinical Pilates?
Pilates and clinical Pilates both aim to enhance core strength, flexibility, posture, and body awareness, but they differ in terms of structure and intended outcomes.
Pilates supports general health and fitness, whereas clinical Pilates is more focused on managing injuries, improving posture, and correcting movement patterns.
In traditional Pilates, participants join a larger class where everyone follows the same routine under the guidance of an instructor. Clinical Pilates is more individualised, led by a physiotherapist or other allied health professional, and conducted in smaller groups or one-on-one.
What happens in a clinical Pilates session?
All new clients commence with an Initial Private 45-minute session. During this private class, we start to develop a program of rehab exercises that is unique to your body and goals, as well as address any injuries that you may have. Following this session, if your instructor deems it appropriate, you can choose to join a group class (with a maximum of 4 people per class) or continue with a private class.
Small class sizes ensure that you receive an exceptional level of care and attention from your instructor.
We have a modern, purpose-built facility here at Williamstown Health + Lifestyle that is equipped with everything you need to participate in your program.
Equipment includes:
- Reformer machines
- Trapeze table
- Wunda chair
- Spine corrector
- Free weights
- Resistance bands
- Balance boards and discs
