The Benefits of Massage

The benefits of massage are far more than just pampering and indulging yourself.  Our resident massage therapist Shane discusses what to expect when you visit him in the Clinic and how different techniques provide benefits.

Massage can be a powerful tool to help you take charge of your health and wellbeing. Whether you are suffering from a specific health condition, muscle tension or just looking for stress relief, booking in for a remedial massage may be just what you need.

With the winter sport season over and the warmer weather upon us, there are always a few people out there needing a little assistance. Wherever your body is at, massage can be the starting point at managing your sore, tired muscles. Remedial massage therapists,  just like all allied health practitioners, want to help you reach whatever goal you are working towards.

Shane’s Massage Style at WHL

I am very hands-on with my treatment and use a few different techniques: Swedish, deep tissue, sports and trigger point therapy. I will always ensure we target the major muscle groups that might be fatigued, tight or just need some love and attention in each of my sessions. Below is a brief description of the treatment techniques I like to use.

  • Swedish massage – is a gentle form of massage that uses long strokes, kneading and deep circular movements. These techniques help you and your muscles feel relaxed and energised.
  • Deep tissue massage – this massage technique uses slower and more forceful strokes to target the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue in our bodies.
  • Sports massage – is a mixture of the above two techniques and is geared more towards people involved in sport activates to help prevent or treat injuries.
  • Trigger point therapy – this technique focuses on areas of tight muscle fibres (“knots”) that can form in your muscles after an injury or from overuse.

Everybody responds and reacts differently to massage however, some benefits of massage can be:

  • Reducing stress and increasing relaxation
  • Reducing muscle soreness and tension
  • Improving circulation, energy and alertness
  • Reducing lower back tension
  • Assisting with reduction of headaches (although we have great headache specialists at WH&L, read here for more on that!)
  • Reducing upper back or neck tension
  • Decreasing anxiety

So if you feel like you’re in need of a remedial massage, don’t hesitate to book here online with me, or call the reception team at (03) 9397 8877 to make an appointment.
